New Haven History
The Iron Fortress, name of both the city and fortress aswell as the alliance which defended it. Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Dragonborn, Githyanki, and a host of other races had banded together to defend the region against a seemingly ever present presence of evil in the form of monsters, minotaurs and barbarian hordes. After a long while of unexpected peace, the common enemies which had served as the glue of the alliance seemed diminished. Naturally this brough out the worst in the different races and eventually cause civil unrest. As bad became worse within the city, the evil began to amass again. Unification impossible, the city surrounding the fortress fell. People either fled or died until all that remained were the dwarves.
Most of those who fled travelled south upon the only road in the region. After travelling almost a month they came upon a site inwhich they declared to make a new home. Hundreds of people with no direction were set straight by an Eladrin man named Vallis Elasia. Cutting down trees and erecting buildings they eventually came to call their new village New Haven. As the war raged on to the north, more refugees arrived by the hundreds needing shelter and food. Farms were erected and food storage facilites put in place. The city prospered for some time until word came that the dwarves of the north had won their battle and were calling everyone back the The Iron Fortress. With the invitation came a warning that the fortress and all the land surrounding it would be under dwarven rule from now on, but they promised equal opportunity and prosperity to any who returned. Many people of New Haven chose to return while the rest decided to stay and forge a new destiny.
New Haven has seen many different rulers in it’s 450 plus years. From elected officials to tyrants and dictators. Currently with a population exceeding 2000 people, it is run by a group of human men who call themselves The Family. A harsh leadership group, they rule with force. Taxes are high and most people live in fear and cannot afford to leave the city. Punsihment is swift for any not abiding to The Family’s laws. Crime runs rampant and unchecked, murders can happen in broad daylight, officials are paid off, the streets are mired with garbage and waste.
